Why did the British initially reject Fritz Kolbe — the German Foreign Office spy who later became "the most important spy of World War II" according to Allen Dulles?

Answer: The British duty officer decided Kolbe's offered intelligence was too good and too voluminous to be credible, concluding it must be either planted misinformation or a provocation.

Kolbe arrived at the British legation in Bern in August 1943 with 186 microfilmed top-secret German diplomatic documents. The British officer's instinct was that no genuine German official could walk in off the street with this quantity of authentic material without some hidden agenda. Kolbe then went to the American OSS, where Allen Dulles had the same initial reaction — but looked at the documents and determined they were genuine. Over twenty months, Kolbe provided approximately 1,600 top-secret German government documents. After the war, he was given no recognition or employment by the U.S. government and spent his remaining years selling kitchen appliances.

The 23rd Headquarters Special Troops (Ghost Army) was classified until what year?

Answer: 1996 — fifty-two years after the unit's operations in World War II

The Ghost Army's existence was classified TOP SECRET and remained so until 1996. Its 1,100 members — many of them artists, actors, and set designers including future fashion designer Bill Blass and painter Ellsworth Kelly — could not legally discuss their work for over half a century. They ran 21 deception operations against German forces between 1944 and 1945, using inflatable tanks, fake radio transmissions, and theatrical sound systems.

What happened to Virginia Hall, the SOE's most-wanted agent in France, after the Nazis identified her as "the most dangerous of all Allied agents in France"?

Answer: She escaped by crossing the winter Pyrenees mountains on foot with her prosthetic leg — then returned to France in 1944 disguised as a French peasant woman.

When Operation Torch brought German forces into unoccupied Vichy France in November 1942, Hall had 72 hours to leave. Her escape route was a foot crossing of the Pyrenees in November — winter conditions, with a prosthetic lower leg she called "Cuthbert." When London raised concerns about the feasibility of the crossing, she cabled back: "Cuthbert is troublesome, but I can cope." She made it to Spain. She was back in France by 1944 for the OSS, parachuting in disguised as an elderly French peasant woman with a gray wig and padded clothing. She organized the Maquis in Haute-Loire and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross — declining a public ceremony to protect her cover.
